Because trials are already too fucking expensive, that’s why.
Most people – especially most bludgers – pulled in by the cops are clearly guilty.
Why waste money on courts, trials, juries, judges etc.
If you can pay for it sure you can have a trial. If not, especially if you’re a bludger, then either pay for your bed & board or the police and send your next of kin a bill for a bullet & a pauper’s grave, and NZ’s nett taxpayers can finally see some savings on the crime and benefit bills.
