Kiwi Muslims stand against violence, call for global response: NZ Herald.

kiwi muslims condemn terrorism

“About 100 people from the Muslim community have gathered in downtown Auckland to protest against terrorist group Isis.

Both young and old are currently at the Aotea Square calling on world leaders to unite against the group, which in the last day has claimed responsibility of the deadly attacks in Paris, which killed up to 120 people and injuring many others.

Several people – including children – are holding signs.

A little girl holds one which reads: “We stand in solidarity with French – we share your pain.”

Another calls on the Afghanistan Government to take more action “before it’s too late.”

While another says: “We condemn the killings of innocent people in Afghanistan.”

One woman told the group Isis had again struck its deadly hand on the people of France.

But many other people around the world – including in Afghanistan – had lost their lives to terrorist actions.”

  1. Tim these Muslims are to be applauded of course. However 100 people turning up for this protest is about the same number who are on the Islamic Terrorism watch list of the SIS.

We cannot pretend that NZ like every other western nation does not have a problem with a significant minority of its Muslim population.

We won’t resolve the problem of domestic terrorism by wishing it away with protests, placards and candle light vigils. Might just as well channel John Lennon with another chorus of ‘Imagine’.

    1. You obviously have not done much activism Brendan.
Getting 100 people to turn up at a march like this is a real achievement which actually takes Huge courage and strong convictions…. something most New Zelanders dont have… even on the most important matters.

    2. > We cannot pretend that NZ like every other western nation does not have a problem with a significant minority of its Muslim population.

We don’t need to. We don’t have a problem with Muslims in NZ.

  2. Which surely reinforces my point? Most of the Muslim community either don’t identify with the sentiments of this rally, or simply don’t give a damn about appearing ‘well integrated’ with New Zealand society?

    1. Brendan, when did you last condemn the acts of terrorism perpetrated by the Lord’s Resistance Army?

Or, when did you last speak out against the legalistic tendencies of Family First?

Perhaps the reason that so few Muslims in this country are heard to speak out (other than what is likely the main reason already mentioned by Tim) is that they think it’s nothing to do with them. Which says it all, really.
