Citizens denied access to public space for Hamilton J Day

NORML NZ Press Statement for Immediate Release: 24/04/2014

Citizens denied access to public space by Hamilton City Council to celebrate Hamilton J Day

The Hamilton branch of the National Organisation for the Reform of Marijuana Laws’ request to use the Hamilton Lake Domain Stage to hold its annual J Day gathering in Hamilton has been denied by the Hamilton City Council. The Council is claiming the event violates the Hamilton City Smoke-Free Environment Policy.

This event is primarily a political protest, involving activists, supporters, musicians, political party candidates and other speakers, but it is also a rare opportunity for the community to come together and discuss evidence based health and justice policies and to connect with others in their community that share their views.

“None of the event information provided to the Council by NORML, or any of NORML’s materials promoting this event, make any mention of an intention to violate a smoking prohibition, and we made it clear that we had offered to help with extra Council signage and include constant announcements to remind attendees that the Council has a smoking prohibition in all City parks to be fully in compliance with their smoke free policy,” said event organiser and Hamilton NORML member Gary Chiles.

NORML has said that it considers the action of the Council to be a direct violation of the organisation and its supporters’ democratic rights to gather and protest against the injustice of New Zealand’s cannabis prohibition, and also an unreasonable assumption on the part of the Council that an event clearly promoted as a law reform protest is promoting behaviour inconsistent with their smoke-free policy.

NORML invites all Hamilton supporters of cannabis law reform to gather peacefully to celebrate J Day at the Lake Domain Stage Saturday 3rd May at 12:00 as planned.

We have a democratic right to protest and a right to freedom of speech under the Bill of Rights Act, and we have every intention of exercising those rights.

ENDS

The power-tripping control freaks at the Hamilton City Council are at it again! Last I heard

A group feeding Hamilton’s needy say the council is forcing them out of Garden Place to stop more homeless people coming to the area.

But the council says while they have received complaints about the group feeding the homeless, their primary concern is the fact that those involved don’t have the appropriate permit to operate in a public.

Now they’re denying people the opportunity to gather in a public space and celebrate a wonder plant that God placed on this green earth explicitly for our use!

Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.”

Big ups to Hamilton J Day organiser Gary Chiles for standing fast in the face of the Hamilton City Council’s authoritarian tantrums.

It is not for our elected representatives to lord it over those whom they are supposed to serve.

Eternal Vigilance welcomes food porn queen Higella Lawson to New Zealand!

Nigella2-635x325

Nodding with approval Eternal Vigilance applauds the eminently sensible decision by Immigration NZ in giving Nigella Lawson an exemption so that she can enter New Zealand and star in a commercial for Whittaker’s Chocolate.
We also Salute Whittaker’s for bringing her to New Zealand and giving her the Role.
Having just endured a very Public Court case and Divorce from a violent Husband… her private affairs were exposed to all and sundry… in particular her drug use which includes Cocaine and Cannabis.

We at Eternal Vigilance endorse Whittaker’s Chocolates to our liberty loving ‘Munchie’ fans and hope they patronise this brand…. they are worthy…. and their Stuff tastes bloody good too!

Nigella is certainly no threat to Kiwis.

The NZ Herald reports…
Celebrity cook Nigella Lawson has been given a waiver to work in New Zealand next month, required because she was barred from the United States after admitting cocaine use.

The British star is visiting New Zealand to make a new TV commercial for chocolate maker Whittaker’s — but she wouldn’t have been able to come without the Immigration NZ exemption.

Cannabis Cures Epilepsy. 1881. Prohibition has been a monumental crime against Humanity.

Killerdrug

How many have died as a direct result of the lies which underpin Cannabis prohibition????

Cannabis has been a revered medicine for thousands of years… yet the fanatical prohibitionists lied, deceived, murdered, and imprisoned countless numbers of innocent people via their obsessive Drug war.
That this mentality still prevails in western civilisation make a mockery of the idea that the West as being ‘enlightened, Free, and Humane’.

It is extremely tragic to consider that the Lies have been so thoroughly imbibed by the Masses, and the fear it instils in parents as to both it’s safety, and because of the terror involved in what might happen if the State finds out they have administered cannabis to their children…. that many will not be brave enough to get this valuable medicine to their kids…. and many will continue to suffer and die as a result of the lies… and the tyranny.

This is one of the reasons why I am dedicated to Ending Cannabis prohibition and destroying the Myths it has propagated.

NZ Research finds Synthetic Cannabis Low Risk. The Star Trust.

psysun

April 11th 2014

The STAR Trust today called for an end to the discrimination against consumers of cannabis.

This latest research into the ‘actual’ harms of cannabis – both synthetic and natural – has revealed that cannabis in any form is extremely low risk when compared to other popular drugs in New Zealand.

The STAR Trust announced that the research shows that New Zealand has two categories of licensed legal highs. One group is low risk and the other group is high risk. The high risk group is the most popular and kills 14 New Zealanders’ every day on average.*

“Anyone serious about improving public health outcomes should focus their efforts on the high risk psychoactives and not the low risk psychoactives,” said Grant Hall, General Manager of Legal Highs industry body, The STAR Trust. “Otherwise they could be seen to be supporting big alcohol and tobacco companies,” he believes.

“If someone drinks a bottle of vodka and dies do we ban vodka? No. But, if someone smokes a joint of cannabis and then vomits, it is front page news calling for a full ban because of the ‘harm’ caused. This is discrimination,” asserts Hall.

This latest research conducted by independent researcher Dr. Geoff Noller consolidated all the available data from before and after the passing of the Psychoactive Substances Act in July last year.

Doctor Noller said that since regulation the prevalence of harms has been reducing. “However, both the industry and government could do more to educate the public about the risks, as there still exists significant confusion around the concepts of low risk and safe use,” he said. “The data suggest that reported harms are primarily occurring outside the parameters of product guidelines and legal compliance.”

This research also seems to confirm that claims of ‘deadly chaos’ being created by low risk psychoactives are unfounded and misplaced, according to The STAR Trust.

The STAR Trust funded this independent research because the industry has been listening to concerns raised and wants to be sure that regulation is delivering better public health outcomes.

Cannabis, either natural or synthetic, is not only low risk but it actually shows significant potential as a medicine. The STAR Trust is also funding research into the potential of cannabis as a medicine to treat a wide variety of illnesses.

“The general public is being continuously fed a diet of media driven propaganda against consumers of low-risk psychoactives. This discrimination needs to stop. Until now there has never been a proper analysis of all the evidence around claims of harm,” said Grant Hall.

The Ministry of Health provided public health surveillance data and are considering the findings, which the industry also hopes will allay public concerns around the future of a regulated market for low risk psychoactive products.

MoH figures: Alcohol kills 800yr, Tobacco kills 4000/yr = 14/day on average.
Key Points

The latest research into the actual harms of synthetic cannabis confirms that a range of harms occur which are consistent with those reported internationally;
The reported harms, when compared to other licensed psychoactives, validate a low risk claim – especially when compared to alcohol;
Since regulation the reported harms seem to be decreasing in line with a reduction of availability and removal of products that pose more than a low risk of harm;
The report identified that most cases of harm occur outside the parameters of stated product guidelines and legal consumption;
There is confusion amongst the population regarding ‘safe use’ and an opportunity exists for further education by both industry and government.

Thanks to the research of Dr Geoff Noller, PhD Research Consultant – Substance Use and Policy Analysis, we now have research evidence that demonstrates just how disconnected from reality the current moral panic about legal highs is.

“Reefer Madness” strikes again.
Or is it “legal highs psycho-killer baby-eater madness” these days?

That is twice in one century everyone has been whipped into a moral panic hysteria using the “reefer madness” strategy – stupid monkeys.

Update: Head Of Epilepsy Foundation Wants Cannabis Oil Available

surg

Wikipedia…. Charlotte’s Web is a strain of medical marijuana processed into a marijuana extract[1] that is high in cannabidiol (CBD) content, called Realm Oil and Alepsia. It does not induce the psychoactive “high” typically associated with recreational marijuana use.
Charlotte’s Web is named after Charlotte Figi, whose parents and physicians say she experienced a reduction of her epileptic seizures after her first dose of medical marijuana at five years of age, and whose usage of the strain was featured in the 2013 CNN documentary “Weed”. Media coverage increased demand for Realm Oil and similar products high in CBD, which has been used to treat cancer and epilepsy in toddlers and children. While high profile and anecdotal reports have sparked interest in treatment with cannabinoids,[2] there is insufficient medical evidence to draw conclusions about their safety or efficacy.[2][3]
Families who say they have run out of pharmaceutical options have moved to Colorado to access the strain. The demand has spurred calls for more research to determine whether these products actually do what is claimed. While the use of medical marijuana products is allowed in many U.S. states, the nationwide legal status of Realm Oil is less clear.

Charlee Nelson passed away Sunday. She had a neurological disease that caused seizures. Cannabis oil could have helped.
They named a bill “Charlee’s Law” after her. Charlee Nelson, who died Sunday, was one of countless children around the country awaiting passage of bills that would allow them to use CBD oil, a form of marijuana.
The six-year-old resident of West Jordan, Utah suffered from a neurological condition called Batten disease that causes seizures, mental impairment, blindness and loss of body control, and eventually death. She was diagnosed with the disease last February.
During that time there have many accounts of how hemp oil – low in THC, high in CBD (for cannabidiol), hence minus the high – can help children who suffer from seizure conditions, such as epilepsy. Dr. Sanjay Gupta’s two Weed programs on CNN have both focused on the search for CBD, which generally takes parents to Colorado for a steady and reliable supply of a strain known as Charlotte’s Web.
Now states like Utah are moving ahead with legislation that will only allow legal use of CBD-rich products, primarily in the form of a tinctures taken orally. Just days before her death, the Utah State Senate voted unanimously in favor of the bill, joining the House in support. Gov. Herbert’s expected to sign it.
It appears that Charlee was never treated with cannabis oil, simply because it wasn’t available to her in Utah.

A modest proposal

3a7fe68874a321b711daef95b38f4075814f19e995d5624f8aed48950f024590

The Ministry of Health is asking for help to shape the National Drug Policy, which sets out the Government’s approach for tobacco, alcohol, illegal and other drugs.

NORML has provided a handy guide to people and organisations make submissions.

Submissions close 28 February 2014.

Quick off the blocks is Billy McKee of GreenCross with a proposal for a licensing system as a method of removing drug use from the justice system and placing it in the health system with appropriate measures for assistance where there is abuse or misuse.

In brief, the Submission proposes a licensing system for all drug use, including the most commonly used drugs in NZ being alcohol, nicotine, cannabis, methamphetamines, opiates, LSD, MDMA and crack/cocaine. The licensing system seeks to educate any person wishing to use a drug and then, following certain criteria being met (as detailed in the Submission) a license will be issued to that person in respect of that particular drug. The license will work similarly to a Subway card upon each purchase which will be centrally recorded and subject to the Privacy Act. Any unusual or suspected misuse by any person which arouses the attention of special health and social services allocated for this purpose, will result in the relevant service seeking to assist the person should there turn out to be drug abuse/misuse and a drug problem.

It’s an interesting idea that might even work. The licensing of medical cannabis users (by way of a a prescription or letter from a licensed health practitioner) is, of course, commonplace in more enlightened parts of the world. Drinking permits have been tried in India and Tonga with some success.

Readers are invited to download and read the submission and send an endorsement.

The idea of needing a permit to use one’s own body is anathema to a libertarian, so no takers here.

Regular readers may have noticed that my posts these days are, as often as not, about cannabis law reform. I certainly have.

Cannabis is insanely high in the “intoxicating mix of Christianity, libertarianism and death metal” mentioned under “Contributors” in the right-hand sidebar. Seems there’s more tokin’ going on than “slaggin’ socialists and headbangin’!”

But there is a very good reason for this blog contributor’s unbalanced content.

The Parliamentary term in New Zealand is three years and this year we’re due for a general election. Likely, it will be in November. I intend to stand again as a list candidate and as an electorate candidate for the party of which I am currently the Acting President, viz., the Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis Party. Until then, dear reader, there will be no respite from my drug-induced ramblings!

2014 is election year! The Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis Party is aiming high!

Our goal is to crack the 5% theshold and get MPs in Parliament. Failing that, we intend at least to frighten the Labour and Green horses into legalising cannabis in the next Parliamentary term. I hope that there is a Labour-led coalition in government by 2015. (Politicians are like diapers. They need changing often and for the same reason.) And I hope that the next government does our job for us, with or without our Parliamentary help. So that I can get off my hobby horse.

coming-out

Why am I even in the cannabis law reform movement?

To begin with, I got involved for much the same reasons that most people do and believe most of the things they do and believe—emotional and psychological reasons. I wanted to justify my own behaviour. The process of justifying my own behaviour led me, after a while, to my libertarian political stance. So, all good!

Today I still believe that there is nothing wrong with drug use provided that it does not interfere with what one is supposed to be doing, viz., leading a good Christian life and, in doing so, leading by example. I won’t be the judge of how much room that leaves for tokin’ up. Not as much as I’d like, probably. 🙁

I read recently that we are fast approaching the day when coming out of the closet as a Bible-believing Christian is harder than coming out as a homosexual. Actually, I think we’re pretty much already there. Coming out of the closet as a cannabis user is also hard. But, these days, even my mum knows I smoke marijuana, and I go to church with her on Sundays. Two out of three ain’t bad. 😉

But coming out of the closet as a cannabis user remains difficult for many. Mainly because of its illegality. For obvious reasons, this is a major problem for the cannabis law reform movement. An untold number of respected members of society are regular cannabis users, but they won’t come out as regular cannabis users and voice their support for cannabis law reform, because they want to stay respected members of society—and they want to keep their careers.

Which brings me to why I’m still in the cannabis law reform movement.

I no longer feel any need to justify my own behaviour. I live like it’s legal. Even if I didn’t smoke cannabis, today I can legally get stoned out of my tiny mind on any one of eleven different synthetic cannabinoids contained in over thirty products given interim product approval by the Ministry of Health.

My involvement in the cannabis law reform movement isn’t now, and never was solely, about justifying my own behaviour. My involvement is about stopping the massive injustice of cannabis prohibition. Arresting people for smoking a God-given herb that makes them happy is criminally insane. I have next-to-no words for people who support laws (such as we have now) that prevent medical cannabis patients from getting the medicine they need. They’re evil beyond the pale.

The Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis Party is the only political party in New Zealand with a sunset clause in its very name. Once cannabis is legalised, the party will deregister. And I can have my life back. 🙂
